CHAPTER 22

At the sight of the goblin horde, Titan's high Dexterity stat seemed to surge in his blood. He felt the need to attract attention, to distance the oncoming attack from his friends.

He immediately leapt into the goblins, Zelara's magic already pulled to his hand.

He Sliced a half-dozen creatures before they even had a chance to stop grinning. Titan focused his power, feeling the air bend to his will as he cut through the air with a hand. Razor sharp gusts of wind gathered at his fingertips and tore through the ranks of goblins. The magic shredded limbs and torsos, sending sprays of dark blood across the green-tinted rock.

He heard a splash behind him, then a sizzle as greenish gas rose where Vesper had leapt into the water to go after him. Lyrael was giggling like a schoolgirl, muttering something incoherent about blood.

"Stay behind me!" Titan shouted over his shoulder. He didn't want to cut through his companions on accident.

"Sure thing, boss!” Vesper laughed, followed by a cut-off howl and a thump. She was putting that enchanted great axe to work, cleaning up the goblins that got past him. Titan wondered what the axe could do. He’d never gotten the chance to identify it.

He cast Slice a few more times, and none of the goblins' makeshift weapons even touched him. Bread knives and serving forks glittered as they were flung into the dark by dead hands. Some of the goblins were left maimed, and they shrieked and wailed, stumbling over their dismembered kin and staring at their missing fingers, hands, arms.

Once these were the only goblins that remained in this green-lit patch of shore, Titan switched away from using Slice. He didn't want to overuse any one of his abilities over the others. If he used Slice exclusively, he might drain Zelara dry, and call an elder noxilith to her location. Titan had enough problems as it was.

But the goblins weren't one of those problems. He killed them with unexpected ease. They must have been a lower level, lower stats, lower everything. He'd grown stronger, more knowledgeable and more confident since the first time he'd defeated them. These weren't half the challenge that the grubs had been.

"Vesper, incoming drain!" Titan called out, seizing upon her magic, taking advantage of the confusion of the injured goblins. He thrust a suggestion into their minds, and it was as easy as pressing a finger to soft dough.

YOU ARE SURROUNDED BY ENEMIES. KILL THEM, OR BE KILLED.

As the threat wormed its way into their simple minds, the creatures fell upon each other in a frenzy. Their eyes shone in the faint light as they viciously attacked their former allies. Titan watched, purposely keeping his mouth closed, as they chopped ears off with sharpened spoons, stabbed into stomachs with tongs, bludgeoned flesh with giant stock pots that looked too heavy for their wielders. The stench of sweat and fear wafted past Titan as Vesper came to a stop at his side.

Lyrael wailed as if in orgasm.
